Higginsville is in Lafayette County, Missouri, with strong agricultural traditions and a real feel of history in the air. Our proximity to Interstate 70 provides access to many opportunities in the Kansas City metropolitan area.
Higginsville was founded in 1869 by Harvey Higgins, for whom the town is named.
Our town has always had a strong farming and German heritage, but we have grown to become much more diverse over the last 50 years.
Higginsville gets roughly 41 inches of rain per year and 13 inches of snowfall. The number of days with any measurable precipitation is approximately 107. On average, there are 211 sunny days per year in our region. The July high is around 87 degrees and the January low is about 19.
Housed on roughly 40 acres, the Lafayette County C-1 School System is one of the first things people will notice as they drive into Higginsville. All district schools are located on one campus. University of Missouri Extensions is a land-grant university in our town that offers programs for agriculture, 4-H youth, business development, continuing education, human environmental sciences, community development and more.
Higginsville Municipal Airport is located two miles east of our town providing maintenance, avionics repair, Tee hangers, tie-downs and other associated services.
Fairground Park rest on 40 acres with a half-mile walking track, a variety of lighted sports courts and fields, shelter houses, grills, a multi-purpose 4-H building, a community building, public restrooms, playground equipment, an amphitheater and open-space areas.
In 2009, a new aquatic center was built that offers a vortex pool, slide and catch pool area, two waterslides and a diving area reaching depths of 11 feet.
Confederate Memorial Missouri State Historical Site includes a 110-acre park with seven ponds to fish. It is home to four historic structures, including a Confederate chapel, a historic cottage, a farmhouse and a 1922 hospital building. There is also a beautifully manicured cemetery with more than 800 graves of veterans and widows.
The Higginsville Depot was built in 1889. Charles Aversman, a former resident, purchased and authentically restored this last depot in Lafayette County. His application to place it on the National Register of Historic Places was granted in 1987.
The Lafayette County Farmer Market showcases local growers who work hard to provide a quality product. The broad selection of homegrown fruits and vegetables are generally picked the day of sale. Special events make the Market an evening to enjoy for the whole family.
Nearby Higginsville Reservoir presents some excellent fishing opportunities.
